Billerud’s third-quarter report describes sequential recovery, while its year-on-year adjusted earnings and grade commentary tell a more qualified story. The useful signal for a packaging buyer is not a uniform market turn: it is the difference between the comparison period, the earnings measure and the grade being purchased. [1]
The earnings base changes the apparent recovery
For Q3 2026, sales were SEK10,166 million versus SEK9,905 million a year earlier, and total sales volumes were 903,000 versus 870,000 tonnes. Adjusted EBITDA was SEK1,032 million versus SEK1,058 million, with a published margin of 10% versus 11%. [1]
Reported operating profit rose to SEK311 million from SEK9 million. The adjusted comparison is SEK311 million versus SEK359 million. The prior-year adjustment includes a SEK350 million restructuring cost. Comparing this year’s adjusted result with last year’s unadjusted result would therefore overstate the underlying improvement. [2]
A procurement team can use both measures, but for different questions. Reported profit shows the accounting result including the prior provision. A consistent adjusted series helps examine the company’s operating comparison. Neither establishes a price increase that a buyer should accept; that requires evidence for the actual grade, contract and delivery conditions.
The report does not describe one paper market
Billerud characterises North American fundamentals as solid. In Europe it reports improvement in containerboard and brown sack/kraft paper, stable conditions in liquid packaging board and white kraft/sack paper, and continuing excess supply in cartonboard. These are management’s portfolio observations, not an independent market survey. [1]
The paper-bag application shown above is one packaging end use; it cannot represent the company’s full regional and product mix. A buyer sourcing cartonboard should not import the brown-sack-paper signal into its negotiations. Keep a separate view of competing grades, available specifications, lead times and the suppliers qualified for the application.
Test the next quarter against delivered evidence
For Q4, management expects stable conditions and pricing to help offset higher input costs. That is a forward-looking company assessment. It does not remove the Q3 distinctions or establish a realised price, volume or margin outcome. [1]
A useful follow-up compares shipments, mix and realised prices for the required grade, then checks whether maintenance and ramp-up effects have normalised. Retain the same earnings basis when comparing quarters. The next report can test the recovery narrative; today’s purchasing decision still needs current, application-specific quotations and supply commitments.
