Start with containerboard, not the group headline
SCA’s 23 October interim report shows a stronger third quarter for its Containerboard segment. Net sales and EBITDA rose from the second quarter even though kraftliner deliveries were slightly lower. The comparison is a supplier-segment signal; it is not a measurement of the entire European packaging-paper market. [1]
For a corrugated converter, the important separation is between what the supplier sold, what it delivered and why its earnings changed. Group revenue would mix several businesses into that reading. The table below therefore uses Containerboard alone and keeps the quarter-on-quarter comparison separate from the year-earlier one. [1]
| Metric | Jul–Sep 2026 | Apr–Jun 2026 | Jul–Sep 2025 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Net sales (SEK million) | 1,973 | 1,828 | 1,755 |
| EBITDA (SEK million) | 446 | 135 | 194 |
| EBITDA margin (%) | 22.6 | 7.4 | 11.0 |
| Kraftliner deliveries (thousand tonnes) | 250 | 254 | 230 |

A price recovery can coexist with lower sequential volume
SCA attributes the sequential increase in segment sales mainly to higher selling prices. Its kraftliner deliveries were 250,000 tonnes, versus 254,000 in April–June and 230,000 a year earlier. [1]
Those directions can coexist: a stronger price contribution does not require shipments to rise in the same quarter. The year-on-year volume increase and sequential decline answer different questions. Choosing only the comparison that supports a stronger-demand narrative would hide part of the operating picture. [1]
Maintenance timing is part of the earnings improvement
Quarterly EBITDA increased by SEK 311 million on our subtraction of the reported figures. SCA reports maintenance-stop costs of SEK 51 million versus SEK 147 million in the second quarter, and a SEK 27 million tariff refund versus zero. It also cites higher selling prices and seasonally lower costs. [1]
The practical point is to avoid treating all of the EBITDA increase as evidence of stronger end-demand or permanent pricing power. Lower maintenance costs and a refund have a different economic meaning from recurring sales. The disclosed items are not a complete quantified bridge, so we do not assign an unexplained remainder to price, mix or another driver. [1]
Use the signal to frame a quotation discussion
A buyer can keep three lines in the sourcing note: delivered volume for the relevant period, the supplier’s achieved-price commentary and the cost or timing items affecting earnings. That record supports a more precise conversation than citing a group growth rate as proof of a kraftliner shortage. [1]
For the next order, ask for the current grade, delivery location, pricing basis and delivery commitment. These historical segment averages do not supply a buyer’s quotation or establish which grades are tight. A competing supplier’s shipments or an independent regional shipment series would be separate evidence, rather than confirmation supplied by the same company report. [1]
Watch whether the improvement survives the comparison base
The next segment report can test whether stronger earnings persist when maintenance timing and refunds change. Read its deliveries and price explanation together, using the same quarter definitions. A durable market conclusion would require that company signal to be reconciled with broader supply-and-demand evidence; this quarter alone does not establish it. [1]
