Valmet disclosed an equipment order worth more than €100 million for Century Sunshine’s new pulp mill in Rizhao, China, on October 21. The Finnish supplier booked the order in the second quarter of 2026. It expects the Shandong mill to start up in June 2028.
The order covers cooking and fiber lines along with chemical recovery equipment. One line is designed for 1.2 million metric tonnes a year and can run hardwood or softwood. The other is designed for 400,000 metric tonnes of softwood pulp a year, aimed at fluff and dissolving pulp. For packaging buyers, that product mix matters. Some of the designed pulp output is intended for uses outside paper packaging.
Three figures to keep separate
The €100 million-plus figure is the value of Valmet’s order. The two pulp line figures describe designed upstream capacity. Century Sunshine’s wider three-phase investment program targets 2.65 million metric tonnes of new annual paper production across various paper-based products. The announcement gives no breakdown of how much finished paper would be available in specific packaging grades.
Sourcing teams can use the June 2028 date to track pulp commissioning. For a purchasing timeline, the next milestones are paper-machine startup, the grades each machine will run and supplier qualification for the intended package.
